Social justice oriented candidate signature gathering for ballot
LAUSD District 2 is still held by one of the staunchest enemies of public education this side of Betsy DeVos.
It’s likely the only way to stop Monica Gülenist Garcia is to run enough candidates to divide up her district.
There is an Asian Pacific American (APA) candidate who taught school alongside one of my law school classmates. She worked with several prominent UTLA activists back in the day, and says she was one of the founding members of Coalition for Educational Justice (CEJ). She went on to become an attorney representing students with disabilities. For the most part, she holds the same values as CEJ and similar minded groups like SLASD.
She needs more help with the signature gathering to get on the ballot. My wife and I gave her several volunteer hours this week, and we made a campaign contribution. We believe she would be an excellent candidate for this district.
Please consider volunteering to help her with the signature gathering process.

If you’re a social justice minded person in Los Angeles, with at least two years of college credit, consider Peoples College of Law (PCL). PCL offers a four-year evening Juris Doctor program to accommodate working students. Successful completion of the Juris Doctor (J.D.) program provides qualification to sit for the California State Bar exam. From their site:

I'm excited beyond words. I got the call that I was accepted around 8:00PM. This time last year I had no degree, and was anxious about returning to UCLA to finish up what I had started eighteen years earlier. Turned out that I'm still on top of my game academically. Now with a UCLA B.A. in Classical Civilization in hand, I'm getting ready to start at the same law school that one of my closest mentors graduated from in 1974. Peoples College of Law is a very special place, and an integral part of my community. I'm ready for this next step that will allow me to apply both my Freireian praxis and my social justice principles on a whole new level.

At 48 years old, the window for that is pretty narrow. If I attend PCL and become a social justice attorney, I could help my community fight neoliberalism. Already an expert on education, I could use law to combat the forces of neoliberalism, privatization, and the nonprofit industrial complex that is currently destroying the remains of our public commons.

On behalf of the California Chapter of the National Association for Multicultural Education (CA-NAME), we invite you to our 3rd annual conference, entitled "Reclaiming Multicultural Education," that will take place Saturday, January 11, 2014 at California State University, Fullerton.
The conference is an all-day event that offers teachers, counselors, and others working directly with diverse student populations an opportunity to learn about multicultural teaching, curricular, and community strategies. We have a line up of respected scholars in the field of multicultural education, including Dr. Antonia Darder, Dr. Kevin Kumashiro, and Dr. Thandeka Chapman.

In 1888 children came to Logan St. School in horse-drawn wagons. In a wooden building on the corner or Montana and Logan St. classes began in the oldest school in Echo Park, one of the 10 oldest schools in the city, and perhaps the oldest public structure in the community. On June 1, public officials, school district dignitaries, former teachers and administrators, alumni, students, teachers, parents and community will celebrate Logan's 125 years of service to the children of Echo Park. We would love to know if you are an alum, a former parent or an interested community member who would like to help out with the party or with a donation. The conference will run from 8am to 2:30pm. It will include student- and youth-led workshops, speakers on educational justice, a curriculum fair, and vendors from the community. Lunch will be served, and translation will be provided.
The Vision Forum for the Schools LA Students Deserve will take place in two workshop sessions, from 9:45am to 10:45am and 11am to 12pm. In the first session we will discuss what we want to change in our schools across LA, and in the second we will envision how we can accomplish our goals. We encourage people to attend the whole day if possible!
The Eastside Schools LA Students Deserve forum is a unique opportunity for parents, youth, educators and community members to share their ideas and hear from each other about what they think the main issues are in public education on the Eastside.

If you have time to attend one after school thing for the remainder of the year, May 28th in support of Crenshaw, has to be that event. This will be a student led event, co-sponsored by CEJ, Community Rights Campaign, Sierra Club and Schools LA Students Deserve. The event should gain major media attention, and is part of our grassroots and legal strategy challenging LAUSD on this destabilizing attack upon one of our schools.
