"If this study shows anything, it shows that we've got a two-to-one margin of bad charters to good charters, that's a red flag." — Margaret E. Raymond (Director Stanford Center for Research on Education Outcomes CREDO 2009)
The Echo Park Moms (& Dads) for Education group camps overnight at Beaudry
Surrounded by well paid employees of charter-voucher advocacy group Families That Can (FTC) and the salaried executives of the California Charter School Association [1] industry group, The Echo Park Moms (& Dads) for Education group camped overnight at Beaudry. Although our community voted overwhelmingly for the public school plan, and Superintendent Ramon Cortines recommended the public school plan, there's still a chance that rouge Board members could hand the taxpayer financed multi-million dollar facility over to private corporation, CNCA.

NOTES
[1] The California Charter School Association (CCSA) was founded by Steve Poizner, an unabashed racist and nativist.
Here's what I wrote on the LA Times piece discussing the camp outs. L.A. school board to decide who will run 13 campuses
ReplyDeleteGlad to see the Times finally call charter-voucher school operators what they are: "outside companies."
Our Echo Park parents were so brave to camp out. You wouldn't think they'd have to given the fact that our public school plan won in the community vote by a more than two to one margin over private corporation CNCA, and that Superintendent Cortines recommended our plan. Sadly, because PSC was conceived as a way to increase charter-voucher school market share, the board members who are close friends with CNCA's well heeled CEO Ana Ponce still might defy our community and vote for their friends' corporation.
The Echo Park/CRES 14 scenario is PSC in a nutshell, there's what the community, taxpayers, and stakeholders want, and then there's what the Mayor and his privatization minded school board members want to do for their cronies in the charter-voucher school sector.
Here are some more photos of last night's camp outs.
